The Reviews for UFO (2018) 720p

Very EngagingReviewed byscreechy_jimVote: 7/10

You may think that a film about a young college student using math to unravel the secrets of a UFO siting would be boring as hell, (I did), but you'd be wrong.

This is actually a very compelling bit of movie making which I enjoyed from start to finish. Even better there is no need to have passed 5th grade (or indeed any grade) math to appreciate it.

It's a very well written, well thought out, and quite compelling bit of film. There are great role choices and a surprisingly competent casting throughout. It was nice to see Gillian Anderson again in something enjoyable, and she was as good as ever, giving a very solid performance as the college math professor. There were a few other familiar faces but most of the cast were unknown to me, though as I said its a solid cast all round.

Its a low key affair which has a well fleshed out plot, script and screenplay, which is just as well given there is absolutely nothing for the story to rest on other than the bedrock components of what makes good movies. If you don't count the two brief appearances of the UFO's in the movie which only had significance for the story and not for any spectacular visual purpose, there' wasn't a so much as a whiff of special effects to be found throughout. Yet, the story was solid, compelling and enjoyable.

Great direction, great production overall really. The movie doesn't pressure you with the need to believe or swallow the story line. It doesn't really matter if your a UFO believer or not. Unlike so many religious movies that require you to have a spiritual predisposition, the story doesn't hinge on the necessity to believe in extra-terrestrial life for you to enjoy the movie. The story centres very closely on the main character and his endeavour to passionately pursue something he believes in, and that has been done very well. It reminded me a little of Close Encounters of the Third Kind where Richard Dryfus single-mindedly (under the influence of encroaching aliens) and desperately tries to get to the predicted landing site of alien visitors. Indeed there are some similarities between the two plots, and though this is hardly the Hollywood blockbuster that was, it is still very enjoyable.

Ok so the bad. I did find a few things in the film that didn't sit right with me. The students necessity to conclusively prove the reporting was a cover-up. Given what he'd uncovered initially, this seemed pointless and largely irrelevant, also I don't know any modern day mathematician that uses Yards, feet, and inches especially when making calculations concerning space, time, and universal constants... as opposed to putting up a new shelf in their garage, which I could easily forgive. Still I'll give such oversights a pass. Generally the story held together exceptionally well and as I mentioned, the story is indeed a very engaging one.

I also think a little more suspense would have gone a long way to heightening my experience. The agency guy played by David Strathairn (don't know if he was CIA, NSA or what) was always skirting on the outskirts of our main character and perhaps a little more direct involvement would have made things more interesting. Everything was just a little too even keel and civilised, and even when his girlfriend is 'giving him the elbow' (dumping him) Its all a very quiet uneventful affair. I will say that for the most part this didn't detract from my enjoyment of the film, but another star or two may possibly have been earned with a touch more drama.

Ok that's it.

Do I recommend this film? Most definitely. Great work and very enjoyable

If you're a math lover, this movie is for youReviewed bydeerobbiVote: 5/10

It was hard for me to stay interested in this film. I'm not a math enthusiast, and it was a touch slow, but I really did try to like it because I felt the idea of it was interesting.

I think us less mathematically inclined viewers won't find this as interesting as a math enthusiasts.

Loved this movie.Reviewed byJesseWaughVote: 10/10

Excellent film. The main character is an interesting representation of a determined individual who doesn't stray from his mission, despite all the obstacles and interpersonal complications thrown his way. This makes UFO an encouraging movie for me.
